Small and medium sized businesses

You want to lower your business’ carbon footprint, and choosing more sustainable vehicles is a key part of that.

But at the end of the day, you also need vehicles that can get the job done. We’re here to ensure you don’t have to compromise. We’ll help you choose the sustainable vehicles at your price point that work for their intended purpose.

Large enterprises

If you have a corporate sustainability objective, you may be feeling pressured to operate more environmentally friendly vehicles.

We’ll ensure any chosen vehicle is still fit-for-purpose and can perform the job you need it to. Our focus is to reduce your fleet’s emissions, without compromising on service levels and efficiency.

Our Green Fleet Management Services

You want your operations to be more sustainable, but that doesn’t negate the fact that your vehicles have a job to do. We’ll work with you to determine the right type of sustainable vehicles for your business, taking into account your location, geography, each vehicle’s purpose, and range requirements.

Canada offers several federal incentives for the purchase of hybrid and battery electric vehicles and charging stations. Several provinces and territories now offer incentives for electric vehicles, charging stations, or both. We’re always up-to-date on the available incentives, and we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on any that can help lower your acquisition costs of sustainable vehicles.

For a true understanding of your fleet costs, you’ll need to know your total cost of ownership of each vehicle, including the more sustainable ones. Before recommending a sustainable vehicle strategy for your company, we’ll calculate  total lifecycle costs of the available options, taking into account fuel savings, reliability, cost of repair, expected resale prices, and other factors, so you can make an informed decision for your specific application.

When it comes to EV charging, there are several options available for businesses. You can install charging stations in your workplace parking lot, or at the homes of employees who will be driving electric vehicles. We’ll help you navigate the complexities around home chargers, including who pays for them, how to reimburse employees for electricity used, and what happens to the charger if the employee leaves the company.

Choosing the shortest, most efficient routes and improving driver behaviour will both reduce your fleet’s overall emissions. We provide effective GPS route planning and telematics programs that address both areas. Telematics systems monitor if drivers are speeding, accelerating or decelerating harshly, or engaging in other behaviors that waste fuel.

GPS tracking systems will identify the quickest route from one location to the next, allowing drivers to avoid traffic and spend less time on the road. We also provide driver training programs that give your employees an overall safety refresher, or allow you to target specific behaviours for improvement.

Keeping your vehicles well-maintained provides several key benefits such as minimizing future repair costs, improving fuel efficiency, reducing vehicle life cycle costs, and reducing vehicle down-time.

We provide fleet maintenance and tire programs that include scheduled preventative maintenance through our network of certified technicians. Our preventative maintenance alerts ensure each vehicle continues to run smoothly and that tires are rotated and replaced as needed.

“Foss is great to work with, easy to work with, and there’s no reason why you wouldn’t want to work with them. Which is what most franchisees are looking for. They don’t want it to be complicated, they want it to be easy, and certainly Foss makes the process easy.”

What to expect when you partner with us for sustainable fleet management

At Foss, we’re excited to be helping businesses like yours transition to more sustainable fleet operations. Whether you’re a small business, a large enterprise, or anything in between, we’ll give you our very best: top-notch service with a human touch, designed to lower costs and increase efficiency, while focusing on sustainability.

When you partner with us for sustainability guidance and vehicle acquisition, here’s what to expect:

1. Research and assessment

We’ll begin by sitting down with your team for a strategic analysis of your fleet sustainability objectives. Then we’ll discuss factors such as what job your vehicles need to do, where they’ll be operating, and what your vehicle range requirements are. We’ll also look at opportunities for improving route planning, driver behaviour, and maintenance planning in order to reduce emissions from gas and diesel vehicles. During this process, we’ll update your company fleet policy to reflect your sustainable mandate, or create a new policy for you if required.

2. Strategy and implementation

Taking your budget into account, our account managers will create a plan that has the correct sustainable vehicle mix for your fleet—whether it’s simply choosing more fuel efficient vehicles, or transitioning some vehicles to hybrid or battery electric models. We’ll brand and upfit them as needed, structure your commercial leases for each vehicle, and then deliver the vehicles to you. We’ll recommend that vehicles are enrolled in our maintenance program, and we may also recommend installing telematics/GPS systems into your new and existing vehicles to further reduce your emissions.

3. Ongoing management and support

You use your vehicles for the next few years, and we’ll be there for ongoing support and guidance as needed. We’ll guide you on when to cycle the vehicles out of your fleet in order to keep your costs as low as possible, and we’ll even handle the resale process.

Fleet Sustainability FAQs

What is sustainable fleet management?

Sustainable fleet management is based on fleet management principles that reduce your fleet’s carbon footprint through choosing more environmentally friendly vehicles and improving fuel efficiency. A sustainable fleet management strategy will guide you on which sustainable vehicles to introduce into your fleet, and how you can reduce emissions from your existing gas and diesel vehicles.

What are the best practices for sustainable fleet management?

The cornerstones of an effective sustainable fleet management strategy are to:

  • identify inefficient vehicles and either replace them with cleaner alternatives or remove them from your fleet.

  • optimize routes using telematics to reduce kilometres travelled.

  • increase fuel efficiency by acquiring low consumption vehicles, keeping up with preventative maintenance schedules, implementing driver training, and reducing idling.

A fleet management company can work with you to identify the areas that will have the most impact for your organization.

What are the Government of Canada’s zero emission targets for vehicles?

The Government of Canada will require 100% of car and passenger truck sales be zero-emission by 2035 in Canada.

What electric vehicle incentives are available in Canada and my specific province?

You can learn about federal and provincial EV incentives, as well as EV tax rebates in our blog Canada Federal EV Incentives: 3 Key Benefits for Fleets.

What can I do today to help reduce my fleet’s carbon footprint, while waiting for the OEMs upcoming electric vehicle offerings?

In addition to the sustainable fleet options discussed already, you can begin transitioning to intermediary vehicles. Start by replacing your standard internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles with hybrid ICE vehicles. This will allow you to use a similar vehicle as you've been using historically, but it will consume less fuel.

Plug-in hybrid vehicles are another option. They combine features of an electric vehicle and hybrid ICE vehicle to further reduce your fleet’s fuel consumption. These vehicles have an immediate effect on reducing your carbon footprint.

Once suitable battery electric vehicles are available for your end use, you can then begin transitioning to them. Moving from internal combustion engine vehicles to all electric vehicles is a multi-year strategy.
