Now that holiday season is approaching, many of us will be busy shopping, hosting parties and/or visiting families.  The following are some tips on how to make this holiday season safe.

TIP 1: SHOP AT EASE

Be courteous – people tend to be impatient especially at parking lots.  Use your turn signal to let others know your intention.

Keep your children near – when shopping with young children, require them to stay with you at all times while shopping.

Have a designated meeting place – plan to have a common area to meet in case you get separated from the group.

Call your financial institution immediately – if your credit card or bank card is lost or stolen, make sure to contact your credit card company.  Keep all your receipts for your record.

Lock your doors – keep your doors and windows locked at all times.  Stow away your purchases in the trunk.

Park in a well-lighted area – if possible always park your vehicle in a well-lighted area or near the mall exit.

TIP 2: DRIVE WITH CAUTION

Be prepared – check weather conditions before setting out on extended trips.  Give yourself extra time to travel during bad weather.  Drive according to the weather and road conditions.

Get plenty of rest – it is important to have plenty of rest when driving long distance.  Share the driving if possible.

Share the road – be patient and courteous to other drivers.

Wear seatbelt – ensure that seatbelts are worn by you and your passengers at all times.   Make sure to secure children in car or booster seats.

TIP 3: DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE

Plan ahead – whenever you plan on consuming alcohol, designate your sober driver before going out and give that person your keys.

Take a taxi or public transport – have someone call the taxi if you are impaired or use the public transport to get home after the party.

Be a responsible host – make sure your guests do not drive if they have been drinking, and always have a variety of non-alcoholic beverages available.

Report drunk drivers – promptly report drunk drivers you see on the road to the police.
