Many drivers are intimidated when they share the road with large trucks. It is important that drivers be aware of the prime constraints linked to operating a heavy vehicle so as to better understand truck drivers’ moves and to be able to drive defensively.
The following are a few safety tips when driving near big trucks:
Side blind spots – trucks have larger blind spots on both sides than cars do. If you drive in these spots, the truck driver may not see you. This can present danger if the truck driver decides to change lanes.
Rear blind spots - trucks can prevent you from seeing the hazards ahead. You will have a wider range of vision if you increase your following distance.
Passing a truck – you need a lot of space and more time than passing a car. Signal your intention to pass and once the way is clear don’t hesitate. Maintain your speed after passing.
Keep your distance – it takes longer for trucks to stop than a car traveling at the same speed. To avoid unnecessary collisions, leave plenty of distance between your vehicle and the truck.
Stopping behind a truck – leave plenty of distance when you stop behind a truck especially when facing uphill. The truck may roll backwards when the driver releases the brake.
Make room for turns – trucks need lots of room to turn. The driver may need to cross the centre line or cut a corner in order to complete a turn. Pay attention to the truck’s turn signal(s) and if possible change to the next lane to avoid any accident.
Remember: the bigger the vehicle,
- the bigger their blind spots,
- the longer it takes them to stop,
- the more room they need to maneuver,
- the longer it takes to pass them.
Share the road and drive defensively. At the end of the day all that matters is for you to get home safely.
