DaimlerChrysler Jeep Floor Shifter Assembly |
DaimlerChrysler Canada will be conducting a product improvement action on 1993-1998 model year Jeep Grand Cherokees and 1993 model year Grand Wagoneers in the near future to install a device in the floor shifter assembly. This product improvement action will address concerns of inadvertent rearward movement and help to ensure safe vehicle operation. There will be no cost to you for this action.
We have found that, in certain circumstances when a driver has not placed the shifter lever fully into the "Park" position and leaves the engine running, the vehicle may unexpectedly move rearward after seeming to be stable. Unintended rearward movement of a vehicle could injure those in and near the vehicle. The modification will help to ensure that you have properly placed the shifter lever into the "Park" position by making it very difficult to place the shifter lever between the "Park" and "Reverse" gear positions.
It will take many months before we can begin to implement the upcoming product improvement action. This is because we need to build and test the machinery that will make the part and then produce the parts. In the interim, there are simple steps you can take that will assure you have no problems.
The unintended vehicle movement that this service action addresses always involves instances where a driver has not placed the shifter fully into the "Park" position, leaves the engine running, does not apply the parking brake and exits the vehicle.
As with any vehicle, you should never exit the vehicle while the engine is running and you should always remove the key from the ignition and apply the parking brake before leaving the vehicle. Your vehicle will not allow you to remove the key unless the shifter is fully engaged in the "Park" position.
The following indicators can also be used to ensure that you have fully engaged the shifter into the "Park" position:
-
Depress the shifter button on the shifter lever and move the lever all the way forward until it stops.
-
Ensure that the shift indicator is in the "P" position.
-
When fully engaged in "Park" you should not be able to move the shifter rearward without depressing the shifter button.
We are working hard to implement this action as quickly as possible. You will receive a notification letter with instructions as soon as parts are available.
